World Map Generator
Generate AI-assisted world maps with biome zones, rivers, landmarks, and drill-down to region maps
World Map Generator
Generate sweeping overland world maps for campaign exploration. World maps use Voronoi tessellation to create natural-looking biome zones with rivers, landmarks, and road networks that your players can explore.
Quick Start
- Navigate to Generate -> World Map
- Choose a World Archetype (High Magic Empire, Gritty Low Magic, Island Kingdoms, etc.)
- Set map dimensions (width/height in miles)
- Click Generate World Map
- Review the generated map with biome zones, landmarks, and terrain
- Click Publish when you're happy, or Regenerate for a fresh version
What Gets Generated
Each world map includes:
- Biome zones -- distinct terrain areas (forests, mountains, deserts, tundra) with Voronoi-based natural boundaries
- Zone names -- AI-generated names that fit the setting
- Rivers and waterways -- flowing between terrain types
- Landmarks -- cities, towns, ruins, and points of interest
- Roads -- connecting settlements via minimum spanning tree routing
- Scale bar and compass rose -- cartographic decorations
- Landmass masks -- for coastal/island settings
Map Styles
Switch between visual styles using the Layers panel (top-right):
| Style | Best For |
|---|---|
| Parchment | Classic fantasy feel, warm tones |
| Clean | Clear readability, modern look |
| Dark | Digital display, dramatic presentation |
| Black and white, printer-friendly |
Toggle parchment texture with the scroll icon in the header toolbar.
Interacting with Your World Map
Pins
Right-click anywhere on the map to place a pin. Pins can be:
- Encounter pins -- stage a combat encounter at that location
- Location pins -- mark a point of interest
- Child map pins -- drill down to a region or battle map
Drill Down to Region Maps
Click a pin that links to a child map to navigate into it. The Hierarchy Panel (tree icon in the header) shows your full map tree -- world -> regions -> locations.
When generating a region map from a world pin, the region inherits context from the parent:
- Biome and climate from the parent zone
- Neighbor biomes for border blending
- Roads that intersect the zone
- Region name from the parent zone
A slide-out panel shows all inherited context before generation so you can review and adjust.
Zone Editing
Click a zone label to select it. The contextual toolbar appears with:
- Edit Label (F2) -- rename the zone inline
- Visibility (H) -- hide from Player-Safe View
- Delete -- remove the element
Player-Safe View
Toggle in the Layers panel. When active:
- Hidden zones, landmarks, and roads are filtered out
- Secret paths are automatically hidden
- Share your screen without revealing GM secrets
Layer Controls
The Layers panel (top-right) provides:
- Base style selector (parchment, clean, dark, print)
- Overlay toggles -- hex grid, climate overlay, biome labels
- Player-Safe View toggle
Publishing
Maps start as Drafts. Click Publish to lock in the current version. After publishing:
- Older draft snapshots are trimmed to the 3 most recent
- You can still regenerate -- it creates a new draft
- Published maps show a green "Published" badge
SRD Compliance
World maps use generic archetypes (High Magic Empire, Gritty Low Magic, Island Kingdoms) -- never trademarked WotC settings like Forgotten Realms or Eberron. The guardrails block trademarked setting names and unicode variants.
