PDF Export
Export NPCs, monsters, encounters, and establishments as print-ready PDFs from CritForge
Quick Answer
Open any saved NPC, monster, or establishment and click the PDF or Print button to generate a print-ready stat block. Uses browser print with CritForge's parchment styling — no server-side PDF generation needed.
CritForge lets you print any generated content directly to PDF using your browser. There's no server-side rendering, no download queue, and no file to manage — you open the print view, hit Print, and save as PDF or send to your printer.

NPC and Monster Stat Blocks
NPC stat blocks
Open a saved NPC from your content library. Click Print in the top-right area of the detail page. Your browser print dialog opens with the stat block pre-formatted in a parchment-styled layout.
The printed stat block includes:
- Name, size, creature type, and alignment
- Armor Class, Hit Points (with hit dice), and Speed
- All six ability scores with modifiers
- Challenge Rating and Proficiency Bonus
- Saving throws, skills, and passive Perception
- Damage resistances, immunities, and condition immunities
- Senses and languages
- Special traits, Actions, Bonus Actions, Reactions, and Legendary Actions
Monster stat blocks
Monster stat blocks support two formats:
- Full stat block — complete entry on Letter-size paper with parchment background, including any lore and tactics text
- Combat card — condensed 2.5 × 4.5 inch card showing core stats and the two most important actions; useful for quick-reference during fights
The monster detail page offers a Print-Friendly toggle that switches the background from parchment to white, which saves ink and scans better if you're photocopying handouts.
Encounters
Open a saved encounter and click Print. The printed layout includes:
- Encounter name, difficulty, type, and party details
- Enemy group table with creature names, counts, CRs, and XP values
- Boss indicators
- Behavior notes for any group that has them
- Tactical guidance (behavior summary and key tactics)
- Terrain use notes
- Treasure rewards (individual and hoard)
The footer includes the difficulty, date, and a "Generated by CritForge" attribution line.
Maps
Print view (2D)
From any saved map, open the detail page and click Export Map. Two print options appear in the dropdown:
- PDF (Print view) — opens a new tab with the map in full color, including legend, grid reference, and scale bar
- B&W Print (ink-friendly) — same layout with a grayscale filter; lighter on ink and easier to read on standard office printers
The print view includes:
- Map name and date
- Scale bar (imperial or metric)
- Read-aloud text block
- GM Notes with grid dimensions, terrain type, and biome
- Tactical notes
- Legend with terrain features, points of interest, and hazards
- Entrance and exit points
- Tactical sidebar (choke points, flanking opportunities, line-of-sight blockers)
The style preset (Default, Parchment, Blueprint, Minimalist, Tactical) and color mode (Color, Grayscale, Black & White) from the map's export settings carry into the print view.
Export from the Map Editor (2D and 3D)
If you're working in the Map Editor, the Export panel offers a dedicated PDF tab with additional options:
- Page size: Letter, A4, or Tabloid (11 × 17 in)
- Orientation: Landscape or Portrait
- Scale: Fit to page, 1 in = 5 ft, or 1 in = 10 ft
- Optional grid overlay, legend, and scale bar
The 3D PDF tab lets you choose a camera angle (Top Down, Isometric, Low Angle, Corner View, or your current view) before exporting.
Establishments
Open a saved establishment. The toolbar includes Export PDF (GM) and Export PDF (Player) buttons:
- Export PDF (GM) — full establishment details including GM-only notes, secret rooms, staff motivations, and encounter hooks
- Export PDF (Player) — player-facing version that omits GM-only content; suitable as a handout for players visiting the location
Note: Establishment PDF export is actively being built. If export is not yet available for your account, a JSON download fallback is offered automatically.
Session Reference Sheets
Open any session and click Print at the top of the reference sheet. The printed version includes:
- Session number and title
- Strong Start summary
- Standalone NPC quick-reference cards
- Scene and encounter summaries
- Thumbnail images are hidden in print to keep the layout clean
Reference Cards
Reference Cards are a separate print system designed for physical card stock. See Reference Cards & Decks for the full workflow.
The short version: go to Reference → Print Cards, search for creatures, spells, magic items, or traps from the SRD compendium, add them to your print queue, and click Print. Cards are laid out in a print-ready grid with optional cut marks. You can choose:
- Card size: Poker (2.5 × 3.5 in, 9 per page), Index (3 × 5 in, 4 per page), or Large (4 × 6 in, 2 per page)
- Theme: Classic, Modern, Dark, or Minimal
- Page size: Letter or A4
Print Tips
Set margins to None. Most browsers add default page margins. For stat blocks and card sheets, set margins to "None" or "Minimum" in the print dialog to get the full layout without clipping.
Save as PDF instead of printing directly. Use your browser's "Save as PDF" destination if you want a file to share or back up. The result is identical to printing to a physical printer.
Use card stock for reference cards. For reference cards, 65 lb cardstock or heavier produces the best results and holds up at the table. Standard 20 lb printer paper works but cards will flex more.
Black & white for ink savings. NPC and monster stat blocks use dragon-red headings and a parchment background. If you're printing many pages, use the B&W Print option (maps) or Print-Friendly mode (monsters) to save ink. For NPCs, your browser's print settings usually include a "Remove background graphics" option that strips the parchment texture.
Landscape for stat blocks with many actions. If an NPC or monster has an unusually long action list, switching to landscape orientation in the print dialog can prevent the stat block from splitting awkwardly across pages.
Dark mode doesn't affect print output. The print layout uses a dedicated white or parchment background regardless of your screen's dark or light mode setting.
Browser Compatibility
Print behavior is handled entirely by your browser. CritForge's print styles are tested against current versions of Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge.
- Chrome / Edge: Best overall print output and the most reliable "Save as PDF" implementation.
- Firefox: Works well; PDF output may render the parchment texture slightly differently.
- Safari: Fully supported. On macOS you can also use the system PDF dialog for additional options.
- Mobile browsers: Print is available but the print dialog experience varies by device. For map exports and card sheets, a desktop browser is recommended.
